The Hidden Secret To Becoming Your Authentic Self

Did you know that October is called the Shadow Season? It's a time where the final harvest is gathered and we're preparing for darker nights ahead. At the end of the month, we have festivals such as Halloween/Samhain, All Soul's Day, and Dia de los Muertos. This is a time that's generally used for self- reflection and honoring our ancestors.

In the spirit of honoring our ancestors and our journey, I wanted to talk about a very special topic called The Shadow Self.

"Beneath the social mask we wear every day, we have a hidden shadow side: an impulsive, wounded, sad, or isolated part that we generally try to ignore.  The Shadow can be a source of emotional richness and vitality, and acknowledging it can be a pathway to healing and an authentic life."

-Steve Wolf

Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung, spoke about the need to understand what he called our Shadow Self. The Shadow Self is the dark part of our personality and behavior that was formed in part by our past traumas and negative experiences.  When we're able to look into this dark part of our natures, it supplies us with the opportunity for deep healing. The process of delving into the darker parts of your nature is called Shadow Work. The purpose of Shadow Work is to transform negative beliefs, character traits, and behaviors into something positive to help you become a more compassionate and understanding person. Jung called this potential for great healing the Golden Shadow.

When the Shadow Self is denied, it can manifest as self-sabotaging behavior, addiction, low self-esteem, intense fear, anxiety, mental illness, chronic ailments, and depression. Understanding your Shadow is a key to understanding your authentic self. As a child, we were expected to behave a certain way. So, we had to conform as a survival technique to ensure that we would be loved and accepted. It's not just people from traumatic backgrounds who do this, but ALL of us because we were conditioned by our family's beliefs. You could've had a wonderful family life, but still suppressed some of your wants, needs, and desires that would've been labeled as different.

Shadow Work helps you release the burdens of anger, shame, guilt, grief and fear which are harbored in the subconscious and unconscious minds. We all have a shadow side, even the most loving and wonderful person. No one is exempt from the darker side of human nature. When we process our Shadow aspects, we end up tapping into our most glorious natures. It enhances creativity, courage, and self-esteem while allowing you to tap into hidden talents and gifts. Then, you can develop those gifts and become your authentic self. Doing Shadow Work can help you develop the following:

- Profound clarity

- A deeper appreciation for your self and your relationships

- Inner Peace

- Understanding of your life purpose

- Acknowledgement of your gifts and talents

- Improved physical, mental, and emotional health

- Increased courage to live your life

- Feeling whole and complete

"To confront a person with his own shadow is to show him his own light."

— Carl Jung
