How Young Sheldon Taught Me to Acknowledge My Genius
May 24, 2024
I have a confession to make. I want to be a genius that solves problems (and mysteries).
It took me decades to realize that I already am (and so are you)!
Strangely enough, it was the TV show, Young Sheldon that made me start thinking about genius. In the show, Sheldon and his sister are twins with one very big difference. He’s a genius and she’s just average. Dare I say, normal?
Although I couldn’t have predicted it, the show triggered me in an interesting way. Growing up, my brother was considered a genius (yes, really) and I was just like Missy. People thought I was smart, but nothing special.
As a result, I spent years secretly (or subconsciously) longing to be a genius.
Because of that hidden desire, I was drawn to TV shows, books, and movies that featured geniuses:
- Thinking their way out of problems
- Solving mysteries with their powers of observation and deduction
- Having an expansive awareness, curiosity, and desire to consider every possibility
- Using their unique skills to save the day
Sadly, in Young Sheldon, and in my own life, people didn’t recognize the particular brand of genius that Missy and I share. Emotional Genius.
If you look at Sheldon and Missy as twins, he’s the one with the high IQ (intelligence quotient) but Missy has a high EQ (emotional quotient).
Throughout the show, Missy gave Sheldon perfectly timed advice when he couldn’t think his way out of a problem. She provided insight, intuition, and encouraged him to take risks.
This, my friends, is genius in action.
Every single one of us is a genius in a particular way. Author, Gay Hendricks, addresses this in his book, The Big Leap.
We each have a Zone of Genius that perfectly aligns with our unique talents, strengths, and passions. When you engage in activities within your Zone of Genius, you light up with excitement, talk with enthusiasm, and the work is so fun that it doesn’t really feel like work.
More of that, please!
Not everyone (including yourself) recognizes or even appreciates your brand of genius.
