Do Your Goals Match Your Personality?

Have you set any new goals for the rest of the month or the New Year?

Most people like to set them around the beginning of January, but don't make it a general daily/weekly/monthly habit.

If you're like me, then you need some time to really think about what you want before you feel prepared to tackle changes or challenges.

I need time to consider my options, create a plan, and schedule recovery time between projects. Trying to keep up with the hustle culture just gives me anxiety.  I know this about my personality and design my days to work with my natural wiring instead of against it.

If you're also an introvert, then studies have shown that your brain needs extra time before switching tasks vs those who are extroverted.

Author, Denise Duffield-Thomas, calls this a Chillpreneur lifestyle.

Her philosophy is to create a business and lifestyle that works with your personality. This includes scheduling your to-do list and being realistic about what you think you can achieve.

Also, adapting a done is better than perfect mindset can help you avoid the trap of perfection and procrastination.

Unfortunately, so many books about achieving your dreams, goal setting, and entrepreneurship are written by Type A personalities.

I found myself doing things because I felt like other people knew better than me about what I should be doing for success. When I tried to implement the tips, tricks, and systems by those authors, all it did was make me super stressed!

Why? Because their advice wasn't a match for my personality.

Often, their messaging or tactics made me uncomfortable and felt completely wrong for how I wanted to work with my clients.  It was about heavily scheduling your day and using subconscious or psychological manipulation to close the sale. Yuck!

I'm all for doing things that put you out of your comfort zone and lead to new growth.

However, there's a big difference between being uncomfortable trying something new and doing something that's not a good match for you because you think you should.

With that in mind, have you re-examined your goals to make sure that what you think you want is a match for your personality?

For example, if you wanted to be a millionaire, and I waved a magic wand over you and made your dream came true, what is the vision you have in your mind of what that would be like?

Is it a really fancy life?

Are you working longer hours and feel pressured to keep up with your peers?

Is it filled with designer clothes, champagne, vacations, a large house, and new friends?

Are people just using you for your money?

Does the thought of being a millionaire excite you or make you cringe a little?

When I originally played this game for myself, I used to think there were so many expectations attached to a millionaire lifestyle. In my mind, I thought you'd have to wear heels, join a country club, and live in a mansion.

Don't get me wrong, I could get used to some things in the millionaire lifestyle, but others just aren't a natural match for me (I hate wearing heels and I don't play golf).

Because my vision of being a millionaire was filled with things I didn't necessarily want or need, my subconscious created an inner conflict between the goal (becoming a millionaire) and my reality.

In other words, I wasn't in alignment with the goal because the life I thought I'd have to lead didn't match my personality.

So, what happens then? Well, your subconscious might take this as a cue to block you from becoming a millionaire (or any goal) to keep you safe.

Crazy, right?

So, if you're a Chillpreneur like me, then it's important to shift your thinking and give yourself permission to achieve a goal even if you're wearing yoga pants, t-shirts, eat nachos, and live in a tiny house.

Yes, you can be a nacho eating, yoga pant wearing millionaire if you want to be!

There is more than one path to success, and I believe that you can make your dreams come true and reach your goals by being true to yourself.

Proper planning, taking appropriate action steps, setting boundaries, and working with your natural personality will make you more comfortable as you design a life that's best for you.
