Hey baby, what's your sign?

Although that was a cheesy pick-up line in the 70's, part of me would really like to bring it back! I'm a HUGE astrology nerd, and one of my special talents is that I manage to work astrology into almost any conversation.

One of the reasons I love astrology is that it highlights certain personality traits which you can use to find opportunities or overcome challenges. Some people feel that your natal or birth chart is the blueprint for your life. It can help you understand your relationships with others, your special talents, and possible career path.

Astrology is more than just horoscopes. It's an incredibly complex field and can take years to truly master. However, I'm going to break down some of the most basic information to help you understand your zodiac signs. If you'd like a little more in-depth information about astrology or other metaphysical topics, then check out the podcast I co-host called the Spiritual Basics Podcast HERE.

What's a birth chart?

Your birth chart or natal chart is calculated with 3 pieces of information: your day of birth, time of birth, and place of birth. With these factors, an astrologer is able to calculate where certain landmarks and each planet were located in the sky at the time of your birth. No two people have exactly the same chart and even twins have small differences. If you don't know your exact time of birth, then an approximate chart can be cast but it won't be entirely accurate.

The zodiac signs and houses

Your birth chart provides a snapshot of where all the planets were at the time of your birth. In astrology, there are 12 zodiac signs which are placed in houses that look similar to a clock. If you project this clock into the sky, it makes 12 different pie wedges correlating to a certain zodiac sign and house which is determined by your birth time, day, and place. Although the individual signs and houses have their own meanings, when you combine them together, they give you even more information.

When looking at your chart, the placement of the sun is what determines your "sign".  For example, when I was born, the sun was located in the pie wedge assigned to Taurus. When most people ask, "What's your sign?", this is how it's determined.

The 12 zodiac signs

Astrology has its own calendar which doesn't begin in January. The astrological new year begins in the spring and corresponds largely with the seasons of the year rather than individual calendar months. Although each zodiac sign covers a period of 4 weeks, it doesn't run from the beginning to the end of each month. Instead, most signs change on the 20th-23rd of the month.

Aries (March 21st - April 19th)

Taurus (April 20th - May 20th)

Gemini (May 21st - June 20th)

Cancer (June 21st - July22nd)

Leo (July 23rd - Aug. 22nd)

Virgo (Aug. 23rd - Sept. 22nd)

Libra (Sept. 23rd - Oct. 22nd)

Scorpio (Oct. 23rd - Nov. 21st)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22nd - Dec. 21st)

Capricorn (Dec. 22nd - Jan. 19th)

Aquarius (Jan. 20th - Feb. 18th)

Pisces (Feb. 19th - Mar. 20th)

Elements and personality traits

Individually, each sign has a range of both positive and negative attributes. To help classify them, the signs are grouped within the elements of fire, earth, air, and water.  Although every sign is different, they share certain personality traits with the other signs of the same element.

Fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

The fire signs are some of my favorites! They can be spontaneous, intuitive, passionate, enthusiastic, temperamental, inspiring, opportunistic, independent, compassionate, impulsive, and adventurous.

Earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

As a Taurus, this is my group! Collectively, earth signs tend to be reliable, stable, practical, trustworthy, logical, conservative, loyal, organized, materialistic, and rigid or stubborn.

Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water signs are known to have all the feels! They tend to be intuitive, emotional, compassionate, sensitive, sensual, imaginative, impulsive, and potentially emotionally manipulative of others.

Air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Natural communicators and messengers, the air signs tend to be intelligent, knowledge seekers, authentic, inquisitive, rational, ideological, philosophical, optimistic, and emotionally detached.

Your 3 Signs

In Japanese culture, it's said that you have 3 faces: the one you show others, your true face, and the face you keep hidden. In astrology, there's a similar concept called your rising (or ascendant), sun, and moon signs. Your rising sign is determined by which sign was on the horizon at the time of your birth. It's the mask you wear for the world. When you're around people who don't know you very well, you display your rising sign characteristics. Think of it as the side you'd like people to see, but it may not completely represent your true self.

Your sun sign is how you express yourself in your truest form. When people know you well, these are the characteristics they associate with you. Your moon sign is how you express yourself emotionally. It's the side of you that you may keep hidden from others. All 3 of these signs blend together to give astrologers a picture of how you live your daily life.

Astrology is a rich and complex modality that can help guide your life in many ways. Your birth chart has valuable information about your highest potential, and who you can become if you overcome your obstacles and fears. I have so many clients who want guidance about their life purpose and how to express themselves authentically. If you're open to it, astrology has a wealth of information to help you find your way in life.

Happy witching my friends!
